Catherine Elliott June 5 - July 14, 2008

Illustration: "Late Summer Garden" oil on canvas, 24" X 36"

Catherine M. Elliott, well-known regional artist, has an exhibit of her recent paintings in The Gallery in the Wood, at Wood Memorial Library from June 5 to July 14.

Catherine is a contemporary artist whose work is evocative of the American Impressionism style of painting. She says of her work: "My paintings are primarily of atmospheric and light conditions portraying the subject's quality. I try to capture the true grace and elegance of the remaining countryside of New England. My goal through my paintings is to capture a moment of time and place by use of color and form to invoke the viewer to "see" the sublime. It is a fascinating challenge to hold on to an hour or a season and to magnify its wonder and peace."

Painting en plein air, out of doors, she seeks to convey the fleeting effects of sunlight and atmosphere. Inspired by Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and the French Impressionism painters, her work explores atmospheric and lighting conditions successfully rendering the overall sense of light.

Catherine Elliott is a member of the Lyme Art Association, and her work is regularly exhibited at the Petrini Gallery in Avon, the P.S. Gallery in Litchfield, Puffins of Watch Hill, and the Brick Gallery in Essex.

Visitors to the Gallery in the Wood through July 14 can enjoy the still lifes, nature, landscapes, seascapes, boats, ships, flowers, and fruits in the exhibit.

A wine and cheese reception to meet the artist will be held Sunday June 8 in the Gallery in the Wood at Wood Library from 5 to 7 PM.

A conversation and book signing with Catherine Elliott and Jim Ballard, author of the book "Little Wave and Old Swell" will be held in the Gallery on Friday June 27 at 5 PM. Catherine
Elliott's oil paintings illustrate Ballard's book.

Jim Ballard has written a number of inspirational books, and coauthored the best seller "The One Minute Manager" with Ken Blanchard.
