NOTED MARINE ARTIST JOHN ATWATER
TO EXHIBIT AT WOOD MEMORIAL LIBRARY

John D. Wadhams, Executive Director of Wood Memorial Library and Gallery in the Wood, has announced that John Atwater, an artist from Avon, Connecticut, will be exhibiting a group of marine and landscape paintings giclee prints, and posters at Wood during the month of May.

A Meet the Artist reception for John Atwater will be held at the Gallery from 4 to 6 P.M. on Friday, May 9th. There is no fee and the public is invited.

The Gallery in the Wood is at 783 Main Street, South Windsor.

Although John hails from Avon, Connecticut, his parents summered on the coast of Maine, and this exposure produced several major marine art paintings, which were initially exhibited at the Mystic Seaport Gallery and later reproduced as prints and posters. Setting records in the poster industry is not easy, but Atwater's posters have remained best sellers as collectable marine images, including three published by the New York Graphic Society.

John Atwater is a member of the American Watercolor Society and the American Society of Marine Artists. After receiving a Bachelor in Fine Arts from Washington University in Saint Louis, John initially worked as a commercial artist, then turned to marine art, using watercolor on paper. Later he turned to oils and has been painting in the luminist Hudson River style, choosing inland New England and again the Maine coast as his subject matter.

Atwater's work is featured in the books "Marine Painting",
and "Splash-America's Best Contemporary Watercolors".
Articles featuring his work have appeared in American Artist, Yankee, Connecticut, and Motor Boating and Sailing.
His work is held in the permanent collection of the Mystic Seaport Museum.

John Wadhams, the Gallery in the Wood's Director, has pointed out that while Atwater's paintings are exhibited regularly at the Mystic Seaport Gallery and the Bayview Gallery in Camden and Brunswick, Maine, art lovers in the Greater Hartford area rarely get to see an Atwater exhibit.

John Atwater's paintings will be supplemented by giclee prints and lithographed posters, offering his art to all ranges of art budgets.

Gallery in the Wood is located in Wood Memorial Library,
783 Main Street South Windsor, Connecticut.
The Gallery is open from 10 AM to 8 PM Mondays and Thursdays, and from 2 to 9 PM on Friday, May 9.
