Saturday,
May 9-"The Rape of Europa"
A
gripping
2007 documentary of Nazi seizure of priceless art treasures from museums and private
Jewish collections in Europe during the Third Reich and World War II; and, their
reclamation and return to their rightful owners by Allied troops under the direction
of General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The film is based
on Lynn H. Nicholas's book of the same title, and Ms. Nicholas does some
of the narration, along with eye witnesses, art experts, and historians. This
film was chosen to be shown near Memorial Day, to remind us again of the many
blessings we have as a free society.
NOTE: An exhibit has recently opened
at the Jewish Museum in New York, "Reclaimed: Paintings from the Collection
of Jacques Goudstikker", the preeminent Jewish art dealer in Amsterdam whose
vast collection of Dutch Old Master pieces was seized by the Nazis and some of
it was ulitmately reclaimed. The exhibit was curated by Peter C. Sutton, an expert
in Dutch art. Sutton is General Director of the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, and
was previously Director of the Wadsworth Atheneum. If you
would like to accompany us on a tour to the Jewish Museum to see the exhibit,
call Wood Library at (860) 289-1783.
