| ED
HICKS,
Glastonbury
artist,
is
featured in an exhibit of his oil paintings of New England landscapes at Wood
Memorial Library from April 14 to May 11, 2009.
A
Meet the Artist Reception will be held on Sunday, May 3, from 5 to 7PM and the
public is invited.
Of his work, Hicks says: "I paint open-ended
landscapes. I give a painting just enough information to evoke a sense of place,
but allow the visitor to fill in the specifics. My studies at the Vesper George
School of Art in Boston gave me a solid academic foundation, and almost 20 years
as a graphic artist helped form the painter I am today. Andrew Wyeth and the early
impressionists strongly influence my work as I attempt to capture the romance
of New England with my brush."
Ed focuses on the landscape's color
and its variations with light. He searches New England for that special place,
a scene that strikes him for a single element which becomes the central point
of a painting. He is noted for creating colors and textures with oil paints that
are uniquely bright and alive.
Hicks says: "People often remark, when
they see my work, they don't usually like some oils because they are dark and
heavy looking, but they like mine - they're different. I enjoy the feedback. I
paint what I feel, and it's great when people see my work and feel something too."
Wood
Memorial Library and Museum is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 AM to 8 PM,
and by appointment. Private showings in the Gallery are gaining in popularity
and can be arranged by calling 289-1783.
